So, if you think that a career in law is something that you may want in your future, but aren’t totally sold on the idea or just aren’t sure where to start; then look no further. We’re here to help.

Not only will you find some guidance but we will also cover what jobs you can expect from the industry, how diverse it is, what education and training you may need and where to go for them, but also how to kickstart your law career in the UK.

IS THIS A CAREER FOR ME?

To work in this profession in the UK, you must have patience and logical thinking skills, success doesn’t happen overnight – so this isn’t the career path to instant gratification. Being a Lawyer or a Solicitor can be very demanding and will require a lot of time and dedication to your craft, but the payoff when you finally get there should be worthy of your time. Fluent communication skills and a love for justice and also problem solving are key, along with the ability to analyse information closely.

The Law industry is heavily competitive, so if you’re someone who simply can’t hold back from a challenge then this is a good area for you. Places at Law Firms and with solicitors are extremely limited, so striving to always do your best is very important to let yourself shine through the rest.

If this still sounds like something you are ready for then: Welcome to the industry!

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER THIS CAREER?

There are many reasons that you may consider this as a career option in the UK. Some people are genuinely interested in it for the good money and power that it can give you, something that will open many doors for you in future. Others believe that they can change the world and want to get involved for the greater good, armed with a strong sense of justice and a solid moral compass. Law is no picnic, but it’s a big wide field that is bound to have something that may catch your interests.

Of course the life of most lawyers is not as it is in the movies or in our dreams, it’s not all glamour and excitement and yelling “objection!” as you call a surprise witness to the stand, the last and final bullet in your belt. There’s also no guarantee that you’ll even see the changes you are trying to fight for happen in your lifetime, but that doesn’t make it any less rewarding.

Lawyers and Law students must go through long hours of hard work, the stress of juggling many projects and cases and meeting the demands of clients. Some of you may even find your sense of justice challenged, which can be a welcome challenge to some and a struggle for others.

It’s a fast paced environment where you can get hands on and stuck in to start reaping the rewards – especially if you’re someone who thrives under pressure.
